Tetris Wouldn't Succeed at This Gaming Ceremony — An Additional Classification Could Fix That
As any major awards ceremony draws close, there’s always a demand for introducing fresh award types to acknowledge underappreciated efforts and fill the hearts of fans with niche passions.
My colleague made the case advocating for terror-themed awards. That would be fantastic. The same goes for tabletop games, representing a dedicated supporter's campaign. But they will have to forgive me for pushing forward since similar to single-minded supporters, there's a strong justification supporting my request remains most pressing above others. This is the request: It's essential to create a category for puzzle games.
Organizing Gaming Categories
Categorizing art by genre is not a science; it remains highly personal, and typically start arguments and end in fuzzy definitions. This explains why movie academies don’t do it. Yet it remains a necessary evil in the world of gaming, showing incredible range they hardly constitute one unified medium.
For comprehensive acknowledgment of interactive entertainment excellence to gain proper attention, and to ensure all game types to have a chance for representation, classification by type becomes crucial.
Present Award Structure
The major gaming awards presently include genre categories for Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Together, these classifications successfully include many game types, making space possible accommodating various experiences.
This doesn't apply to puzzle games. There’s simply nowhere to put them. Consider three of this year’s best games, showing diverse approaches: the architectural riddles in a particular game, intense tile-matching from another release, thought-provoking social scenarios in another game. What category would fit them among existing types? Simply put, no category fits.
Recognition Challenges
Numerous examples exist excellent brain-teasers released every year lacking appropriate categories in entertainment awards, if they accidentally match classification types such as Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, or the extremely competitive independent game categories.
- A renowned logic title wasn’t nominated completely during that awards season
- Another imaginative release received no nominations in 2019
- A beloved organization game was overlooked recently
- Limited numbers of puzzle games barely qualified for small studio or handheld classifications
Value of Brain-Teasers
Commonly they're small games, but the art behind logic titles holds tremendous importance. Iconic mobile puzzle games stand as most popular titles in the world continuing this trend for over a decade.
The famous puzzle experience rivals well-known building titles competing to become highest-selling title ever; it additionally competes for best game of all time. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks within interactive entertainment, and engaging across multiple categories.
Recommendation and Reasoning
Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter this problem. You could fill five nominees engaging, different, qualified experiences every year with ease — perhaps, with difficulty, given the need to exclude numerous deserving experiences.
To emphasize again, these include experiences lacking appropriate categories at major gaming awards. Logic title developers are working at the challenging frontier game development, creating some of the purest expressions of gaming itself. Just like movie stunt professionals, they merit acknowledgment. We shouldn't delay generations.
