Individuals Coming Off Weight-Loss Medications Put On Pounds Four Times Faster Compared to Dieters
Fresh analysis reveals that individuals who discontinue popular slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on lost weight at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt traditional lifestyle plans.
Research printed in a prominent health publication shows that while obese individuals often shed substantial amounts of their total mass while using the jabs, the weight is regained at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.
"People using such drugs must be cognizant of the risk of fast rebound weight gain when the therapy is stopped," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of recovery means a return to original mass within about 18 months.
Analyzing Therapies
The analysis, which reviewed 37 of trials involving thousands of participants, compared the outcomes of the injectable medications with older methods.
Researchers emphasize that people who shed pounds through diet and exercise usually experience a slower creep back—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.
The Reason for the Fast Regain
Doctors propose the way of the drugs explains the heightened rebound.
GLP-1 drugs copy a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which helps regulate appetite.
"Artificially providing the hormone levels far above than the body's typical production might result in the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also diminish responsiveness to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.
"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement means appetite is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating much more probable."
An Ongoing Disease?
Medical guidelines advise the injections for people with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.
A number of clinicians contend that, considering the significant potential of weight regain, the therapy might need to be long-term.
This view is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the findings "emphasize the chronic character of obesity," comparing it to managing diseases like high blood pressure.
User Testimonies
Users who have discontinued the medication explain a sudden return of hunger.
"It felt as if a switch that goes on and you're instantly ravenous," described one woman.
This challenge is worsened if individuals have not established sustainable dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.
Growing Use
Survey data indicate that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with demand continuing to grow.
- Adoption is more common among women than males.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
- A large proportion access the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
Finally, researchers caution that while these medications are potent agents for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent cure and long-term success hinges on ongoing lifestyle management.
