Cancellieri Displays Flashing Moments of Exceptional Talent in Bright Spot for Haywire Lazio

The feeling at their home stadium was decidedly gloomy during the weekend fixture. The Biancocelesti found themselves behind against Torino, an opponent that had conceded 10 goals while managing only two goals in their previous five league matches. Supporters from the Curva Nord were wrapping up their most recent demonstration in a continuous dispute with club owner Claudio Lotito.

A Season Unraveling?

Had their campaign unraveling, or did there exist a thread holding it together in the first place? They reappointed Maurizio Sarri as head coach during the off-season, only for him publicly stated that the board had omitted to inform him about a registration embargo they were about to receive for financial irregularities. Reports that his departure was imminent were not true, but he did say that Lotito had "misled" him.

The Biancocelesti were just as chaotic in their performances as behind the scenes, beating Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but being defeated in the rest of their opening fixtures, which included the capital clash. From one game to the next, it has been hard to determine if progress is being made or collapsing.

The Youngster's Unexpected Comeback

At least one man remained positive amid the chaos. Matteo Cancellieri had not been expected to feature for Lazio this year. He was on the previous campaign at Parma as a loanee and, during the summer break, his owning club were pushing for him to extend his stay for another season. The registration embargo necessitated a reconsideration. Lazio could not afford to thin their squad with no new signings.

Cancellieri arrived initially under Sarri's first spell, back then just 20 years old product of Verona's academy. He recorded 20 matches in the league with the club in the 2022-23 season, all but one of those coming off the bench. Their former sporting director, Igli Tare, whose tenure ended following that term, would later accuse Sarri of "telling everyone Cancellieri was destined for stardom then never playing him."

Finding His Best Role

Maybe Sarri was persistently working to identify the exact type of his skill set. Labeled as an attacking winger when he joined, Cancellieri nevertheless spent much of that season as a struggling deputy to Ciro Immobile at No 9. In 63 appearances during spells with Empoli and Parma over the last two seasons, his tally was seven goals. Shoehorn
