At least thirteen passengers perish and 98 hurt in train derailment in Mexico.

A fatal train derailment in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel censure from critics regarding the pace and handling of the country's key government projects.

The accident happened on the trans-isthmus railway, a line developed to join the Atlantic and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was intended to provide an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, intended to promote commercial progress in the area.

“We shall meticulously determine the reasons behind this incident,” stated the head of state.

The president announced that, of the some 250 individuals on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in serious condition. The president added plans to visit Oaxaca to speak with those impacted.

Flagship Project of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a signature public works project of the previous administration, whose time in office ended the prior year. This project was closely associated with his administration's developmental agenda for the southern region.

Another multi-billion dollar train initiative from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the broader strategy to kickstart the economy of a comparatively less developed part of the country.

Building Management and Safety Concerns

The development of both rail lines was overseen by the nation's military, marking a significant expansion of its responsibilities in national infrastructure. They were built at an fast-tracked pace, surpassing expectations to be partially launched before the end of that government.

However, this accelerated timeline had also fueled ongoing concerns over construction quality.

  • Sunday's accident was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This involves an previous collision this month when a train hit a truck at a railroad crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also experienced several non-fatal derailments.

Appeals for Review and Suspension

In the aftermath of the disaster, the chief of a key rival party urged an immediate pause in the construction and operation of all such projects.

This halt was requested until the completion of a full independent investigation. The party stated that the tragedy "requires swift accountability."

In reaction, the president maintained that the train had been functioning in total compliance with all security protocols. Promises were given that the government would be "diligent" in both the construction and running of these strategic undertakings.
