One can find numerous contenders for the designation as “world’s most significant invention.” The wheel. The printing press. The steam engine.
As per a recent publication, however, that honor belongs to the automated sawmill conceived through Dutch inventor Corneliszoon van Uitgeest in 1593.
“Prior to automated cutting, building a modest trading ship necessitated around 10 lumberjacks laboring over three months,” notes Jaime Dávila. “Using wind-powered sawmills, the same quantity of cut lumber might be manufactured within seven days.”
Owing to their rapid automated saw, which turned timber to planks with virtually no manual labor, the Dutch could construct vessels faster than anyone else, which unleashed a century of Netherlands maritime, economic as well as cultural supremacy across Europe and the world.
